Leviathan by Scot Westerfeld is a wonderful twist of alternative history and hard science fiction. Going back to WWI Westerfeld uses a brilliant mix of real history and great imagination. If you want a strong female lead for your young reader (or old reader honestly) I wouldn't hesitate to gift this series.

Midnight Riot by Ben Aaronovitch may have been a bit graphically violent but it was totally worth every bloody drop of it. I'm listening to book two already and look forward to all the books to come.
